Of 30th birthdays and being home sick
Jun. 11th, 2008 10:12 amSo, I'm a bit overdue in my post-wife's-30th-birthday-weekend report. This is largely due to the fact that, for the past three days, I've felt like death warmed over. Sinus infection hit me at some point during the weekend; had thought it was allergies until Monday morning, when I just got that... 'feel'... that something else was going on in my lungs or sinuses. The doc confirmed it; I've been home resting since late Monday afternoon with antibiotics, an internet connection, and boxed sets of BSG. Oh, and Xbox360 demos. So, it's not been a huge disappointment, though I would like to actually, you know, get through more than a 1/2 day of training for my new job.
The weekend I planned out for my wife's 30th birthday went off smashingly, a small hiccup aside. Friday night, I went with her, her best friend, and her best friend's mom to see Sex & The City: The Movie. I didn't *take* her, per se, since I had bought her the 'full series boxed set' of S&TC that included a gift certificate for a ticket to go see it. But I did drive. :) Before some of you gents out there start calling for my resignation from the Man Club, know that I had already watched the series before, and I'll tell you this: the humor ranges from locker room variety to relatively well-placed play on words. If I didn't find the main character/narrator quite so annoying, I'd highly recommend the series on the whole. As it is, the movie has a *little* more impact if you've seen the series- small references here and there.
Saturday was a trip to the Maryland Zoo with the wife and her dad; she wanted to see Samson, the first African elephant born in a zoo. The zoo itself is fairly well maintained (if a bit of a hassle to get through, going through less... well-maintained areas of Baltimore). Hot day, but enjoyable. Then it was off to Melting Pot for dinner with her family, her best friend, best friend's mom, and best friend's fiance. Our server was superb (and broke out with the WoW and 80s movies references- if you hit the Reston MP, ask for John as your server).
Sunday, we went to a church brunch, then got together with some out-of-town friends for a 'real' lunch at Cheesecake Factory. These friends had already agreed to help me 'guide' my wife home so that the surprise could be sprung... I had planned to be back by about 1pm. We exchanged some late Christmas and birthday gifts over lunch- one of which was a gift card for Build-A-Bear for their daughter's 3rd birthday... which led us to B-A-B there in the mall. At 1:10 pm. So, come 1:25 pm, I was sort of trying to usher folks to the car... "Can't wait to show you our house, let's go! Wheee!" Meanwhile, my wife's best friend is texting me, asking me where we are.
I guess in hindsight, I should've told them to go ahead and start eating... we got there around 1:45. My wife was going to give our friends the slow tour, but I raced upstairs to prep everyone, then raced back down to tell my wife a small white lie: the dishwasher was leaking all over the kitchen floor. She beat me up the stairs, and ran smack into our assembled friends and neighbors. She was VERY surprised, and very happy.
I think I did a good job of giving her a happy birthday weekend, overall- she told me as much. There were about 25 people there, including us and a handful of kids. I'm hoping folks had at least a moderately good time, despite our tardiness. There was more than enough food, drink, and cake (that last prepped by her her best friend), so there's that.
