That's a bit of open ended question, but it was brought about by just kind of perusing my friends list.

Most of my LJ friends, I know from other forums/websites.  I know only a handful of the others in person.  Another (less than a) handful I know as 'LJ friend of an LJ friend', having added them after either seeing them enter one or more comment(s) of interest in a LJ friends' comment field, or seeing that "Hey, we have more than one mutual friend" if I'm curious as to who the person is.

It's not really the most efficient way to build what you might call a network (is that the right word for a group of LJ friends?), but at least it gives me interesting reading throughout the day.  :)

For the most part, it's through real life connections. A few are people from forums or other online communities. Only one or two are "friend-of-a-friend" or "posted interesting comment in someone's LJ."

It's funny... I started asking myself odd questions about... well, myself. For instance: does the method by which I have chosen to add people to my LJ friends list say anything about me?

Various forums or I've met them IRL. You are a forum person, but I drive right by your house twice a day monday - friday (except when I'm home with a bum knee)

Oddly, there's only one other horse riding person on my LJ friends list - someone I went to college with.

Bwahahaha

About 75% from real life, though some real relationships were strengthened through LJ. Of course, I have no friends, only ex-lovers and club associates. But I call them friends coz I don't have much else.

Oh God, here there and everywhere. I have a bunch from forums, a bunch from IRL, High School, old work friends, friends of teh BF, some from Deviant Art and some more from LJ. But then again I've had mine since 2001 ish.

Fourm-folk and/or game designers for the most part. A few friends of friends, if they seem to be of the gamer/geek persuasion.

Pretty much the same- almost everyone on my list is either at a forum I go to or from an online comic I like.

Also, anyone who posts on my journal gets at least a look-at.

These days, the online friends outnumber the ftf friends on my LJ list. I have a few friends-of-friends and a couple of authors whose blogs I've added because I enjoy their print works.
